Sewer Cleaning

Sewer Cleaning In Brea, CA

Sewer cleaning removes the material built up along the wall of a sewer line, rather than punching a hole through whatever is blocking it. At The Rooter Company, we clean sewer laterals and building mains across Orange County. We use cable, rodding, and hydro jetting, with a camera in the line to confirm the result.

Most homeowners meet us during a backup and want flow back. That is a clearing call, and it is the right first move. Cleaning is the job that follows. It is what keeps the same line from backing up next season.

Clearing a Line and Cleaning It Are Not the Same Job

A clearing call ends when water drains again. A cleaning ends when a measured amount of material has come out of the pipe and a camera confirms it. That difference is not marketing language. It is how the work is bought.

NASSCO’s Sewer Pipe Cleaning Specification Guideline is the template municipalities use to purchase sewer cleaning. It sorts the work by how much material is in the pipe. Light cleaning covers settled deposits up to 25 percent of the pipe in lines of 12 inches or less. Heavy cleaning covers deposits above that threshold, plus obstructions and attached grease.

The guideline tells the contractor what has to leave the pipe. Heavy cleaning requires removing everything “that will reduce the hydraulic capacity of the sewer and limit future maintenance access of remote equipment.” It also ties payment to proof: cleaning is measured by the linear foot of the sewer “actually cleaned and verified through television inspection.”

That is a purchasing guideline rather than a code, and NASSCO says so in its own disclaimer. We apply the same idea on a private lateral: define what comes out, then put a camera on it.

Signs the Blockage Is in the Main Line, Not a Fixture Trap

A main line blockage affects several fixtures at once, because they all drain into the same pipe. A trap blockage affects one.

  • The lowest drains in the building back up first, usually a tub or a floor drain.
  • A toilet bubbles or drops when a sink or washing machine empties.
  • Water appears in one fixture when a different one is used.
  • Every drain in the building is slow at the same time.
  • A cleanout in the yard overflows when water runs inside.

Any of these means the problem is downstream of the fixtures. Do not keep running water while you wait.

What We Use to Clean a Sewer Line, and When

The method follows the pipe and the material in it, not a price list. We put a camera in the line first whenever the line will pass one.

  • Cable, also called rodding or snaking. A rotating cable carries a cutting head down the line. It is the right tool for a solid obstruction and for cutting roots at a joint.
  • Hydro jetting. High pressure water scours the pipe wall and flushes the debris downstream. It is what removes grease, sludge, and scale rather than just boring through them. Our hydro jetting service covers it in detail.
  • Root cutting. A cutting head sized to the pipe takes roots back to the wall. Roots return, so this is paired with a plan, not sold as a permanent fix.
  • Camera inspection. Before, during, or after, depending on the line. It is the only way to know whether the pipe is clean or merely open.

Matching the Cleaning Method to What the Camera Shows

What the camera shows

Method that fits

Solid obstruction, pipe wall sound

Cable, then a camera pass

Grease or sludge coating the wall

Hydro jetting

Roots entering at one or two joints

Root cutting, then jetting

Hard scale in cast iron

Jetting, sometimes with a descaling head

Cracks, a belly, or an offset joint

Why a Cleared Line Backs Up Again

A line that was cleared six months ago backs up again because the clearing removed the blockage, not the reason for it. The cable opened a channel. Everything coating the wall stayed put.

Three causes account for most repeat backups:

  • Grease. It cools and sticks to the wall, then narrows the pipe a little more each month.
  • Roots. They come back through the same joint they came through last time.
  • Scale. Cast iron corrodes inward and leaves a rough surface that grabs solids.

None of these is fixed by restoring flow. A cleaning takes the material out, and a camera pass afterward shows what the pipe wall looks like underneath. Where the real problem turns out to be structural, it belongs to our sewer services or under trenchless sewer replacement.

Putting a Problem Lateral on a Schedule

A lateral with a known defect is cheaper to maintain than to keep rescuing. An emergency call comes at the worst moment, often with sewage already in the building. A scheduled cleaning happens on a weekday, with the line empty.

We recommend a schedule only where the camera gives a reason for one. Roots at a known joint, a grease-heavy kitchen line, and a cast iron run that has started to scale all qualify. Without a finding, a schedule is a subscription to nothing.

What Changes the Scope of a Cleaning

  • What is in the pipe. Soft blockage, grease, roots, and hard scale are four different amounts of work.
  • Pipe material. Cast iron, clay, ABS, and Orangeburg each tolerate different methods.
  • Length and access. Whether a usable cleanout exists, and how far the run goes.
  • Condition. A damaged pipe limits the pressure and the cutting head we can safely use.

Estimates are free, written after the line has been looked at.

Where We Clean Sewer Lines in Orange County

We clean sewer lines throughout Orange County, where the work splits along the age of the housing. Older tracts run clay and cast iron with a joint every few feet, and that is where roots and scale show up. Newer construction runs ABS, where grease and bellies are the usual causes.

Sewer Cleaning Questions We Hear Most

What is the difference between clearing, cleaning, and jetting?

Clearing removes the blockage so the line drains again, usually with a cable. Cleaning removes the material built up along the pipe wall, which is a larger job with a defined end point. Jetting is one method of cleaning, using high pressure water to scour the wall and flush debris downstream. A cable can clear a line without cleaning it, which is why a line often backs up again after a clearing call.

How often should a sewer lateral be cleaned?

There is no standard interval for a private sewer lateral. Any company quoting one without inspecting the line is guessing. The right interval comes from what a camera found. Roots returning at a joint, grease building fast, and corrosion in cast iron each set a different schedule. A line with no findings does not need one at all.

Does cleaning damage old clay or cast iron pipe?

Cleaning damages an old pipe when the method is chosen without looking at the pipe first. Clay is brittle at the joints, and cast iron can be corroded thin. Both need the pressure and the cutting head matched to their condition. That is why we put a camera in the line before jetting, and keep one in the pipe during cutting work. A line that is already cracked or collapsed is not a cleaning candidate.

What does a camera inspection add to a cleaning?

A camera inspection is what tells you whether the pipe is clean or only open. It shows the condition of the wall and the joints once the material is out. That is the difference between a line that will hold and one that will not. It also finds the cause of a repeat backup, such as roots at a specific joint or a low section holding water.

What happens if cleaning cannot fix the line?

Cleaning cannot fix a structural problem, and a camera will show that within minutes. A crack, a collapsed section, a belly that holds water, or a joint that has pulled apart all need repair rather than maintenance. In that case we stop, show you the footage, and quote the repair instead. Our sewer services page covers how repairs are graded.
